Senior/Unrestricted License Requirements

In the State of PA, a teen driver could be eligible to get their senior license 6 months early.

How this works is:

At the age of 16, a teen driver gets his or her learner’s permit. They have the permit for 6 months which brings them to the age of 16 ½ years old and they take their test to get their junior license.

They pass the driver’s road test, they receive their junior license.

One requirement is that they need to have their junior license for at least 1 year, which they will be 17 ½ years old. Once that requirement is met along with the following, they can receive their senior license:

1. Must successfully complete a Driver’s Training Course consisting of 30 hours of classroom theory and 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction approved by the Department of Education and Transportation.
2. Held current Pennsylvania Junior’s License for at least 1 year
3. Cannot be involved in a crash in which they were partially or fully responsible for during the past 1 year
4. Cannot be convicted of any violation of the Vehicle Code during the past 1 year.
