Christine’s Law

PA law requires drivers to remove snow and ice from their vehicles. The law is called Christine’s Law in memory of Christine Lambert. In 2005, she was killed when a large piece of ice broke free from a passing car and crashed through her windshield.

Under this law, drivers could face fines if they leave snow or ice on their vehicle more than 24 hours after a heavy snowfall. Fines start at $50 and can go up to $1,500 if a driver’s snow or ice build-up hits another car or person. Before the law was passed, drivers could be fined only after snow build-up had been determined to have caused serious harm.
